Death visited me
withdrew between my ribs
made itself a mihrab from my grief for your absence.
With every fugitive dusk
darkness floods from my eyes
night falls over the city
and death looks at the arcs of my mind
chanting its hymns
calling people.
They go towards their temporary death
while I go towards you
alone
insistent
I realise I am conscious
my eyes become a crypt
where I keep the wonders of our Thousand and One Nights
its maze takes me to the empires of our memories
death is a plant hidden within each memory
who built this majestic castle over the ruins of absence?
We live together in my dreams
in the depths of my consciousness, we talk.
You remind me: together we wrote to death
together we called it
together we sacrificed to God
but he refused my gift.
You come as if you and not I were the tormented one
as if you and not I had swallowed the catastrophe
as if you and not I was choked by it.
You kill my sorrow in the midst of its devotions
wreck my confusion by the wreath of your holy presence
your voice is hidden between Andalusian stanzas
your body swallows the glamour of Pharaonic goddesses
you look like them
like a glorified myth
when you gaze at me
eye to eye
you break through me
obliterate me
yours are the eyes that should come to mind
when vision is mentioned.
How can I live without Raghd
without you close
you are far away
I am not consoled
and I am not patient.
Alone I looked for you
alone I lived in absence
I found nothing but my shadow in two shapes.
A female name that means ‘pleasant’ or ‘comfort’.
